FOREST MASTER ELECTRIC WOOD CHIPPER 4HP DIRECT DRIVE

The FM4DDE is a patented GB2008049.5 compact electric wood chipper capable of chipping wood up to 50mm (2 inches) in diameter. The FM4DDE’s 4hp 2800-watt electric motor can rotate the chipper drum at a maximum of 2800 rpm. This enables it to easily chip all kinds of freshly cut wood from hard to soft. It is a direct drive for better performance and this also means that there are no belts that you have to keep adjusting. Although it is a powerful 2800-watt electric motor, it still runs off standard 240v household mains electricity. The UK model of the wood chipper is fitted with a UK 3-pin plug and the EU model arrives fitted with an EU Plug.

The FM4DDE has twin reversible blades so that when one side becomes worn from use the blades can simply be turned around to use the second side. This saves the need for constant resharpening and effectively doubles the life of the blades. The lightweight and compact size of the chipper enables it to be extremely manoeuvrable and easy to store. Both the feed hopper and the discharge chute have a hinged chute design, enabling the user to access the drum for quick maintenance easily. The end of the FM4DDE’s discharge chute can be angled to direct the chips.

The entrance leading directly to the cutter (hopper chute) is 95mm x 95mm. The upper section has a CE plate fitted. This safety plate is not required for USA or Canada.

  3. Superb piece of kit. Currently chipping its was through a laurel hedge. Really does shred 5cm diameter newly cut wood; dry as long as it is small – finger sized is fine. Extremely safe, could cannot get anywhere near the blades when running. Very pleased with it.

  4. Love the Machine, impressive bit of kit.
Chose to remove bars from the discharge (presumably a safety feature) because it clogged up with them on but no problem after removing them, and I don’t plan on putting my hand in when it’s plugged in anyway.

Q & A

How many amps will this draw? John asked on June 23, 2024

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry! The Forest Master FM4DDE Compact Electric Wood Chipper is powered by a 4 HP (2800-watt) motor. Given that it operates on standard household electricity (230-240V), you can estimate the current draw with the following calculation:

Current (Amps) = Power (Watts) / Voltage (Volts)

For our chipper:

Current = 2800W / 230V ≈ 12.17A

This means the wood chipper draws approximately 12.17 amps during normal use.

As this is close to the limit for standard UK 13-amp plugs, we include a 10-amp circuit trip to as well as a slow blow fuse to prevent any issues with blowing fuses when the machine starts up.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Pourquoi il ne faut pas utiliser de rallonge électrique si le câble est si court ? Why shouldn't an extension cord be used if the cable is so short? Marc Chevré asked on November 15, 2022

English --
On average, we lose 1 volt of power for every meter of cable. So if you were to extend over 30 meters, then you’re losing 30 volts of power. When a motor is designed for 230/240 volts, you are overloading the motor by running it with less than 220 volts.

In the past, customers have been known to run at 200 volts with no issues, but over time this can cause issues with the motor causing them to fail.

Standard household mains will typically run at around 230v/240v, but it’s recommended that you check this as it’s quite possible that you’re running at a lower level.

The extension cable you use will also have to be 2.5 cable and be used fully unwound.

Not sure where you get your numbers from, but the standard voltage drop for 2,5mm2 cable is 18mV/A/m (double drop covers live and return). Using the 4hp figure for your machine this is approx 2984W, Taking mains voltage to be a nominal 230V, this gives approx 12.97A as the current drawn. So, the voltage drop per metre of cable is about 0.233V and on a 30m cable would be approx 7volts - not 30. Since the machine also has a rating of 2800W this equates to 0.219V per metre of cable - about 6.57V drop.

Thank you for your detailed feedback and for sharing your calculations. Your points are well-taken and contribute significantly to a nuanced understanding of the situation.

It's important to clarify that my original comment was aimed at providing a conservative estimate to help prepare buyers for a worst-case scenario. By presenting these figures, our intention was to ensure there are no surprises, especially in critical or extended use situations.

Moreover, the figures I used also take into account factors like the start-up current draw of induction motors, which can be significantly higher than the running current. This start-up spike can lead to a greater voltage drop, albeit momentarily, which is critical to consider for motor health over time.

Additionally, while thinner cables might be rated for certain conditions, they often experience higher losses when they're extended over long distances and under continuous load, hence our recommendation for thicker cable and ensuring it is used fully unwound to minimize resistance and heat buildup.

We appreciate your engagement and the opportunity to clarify these points. Our goal is always to ensure the longevity and efficient operation of the equipment we recommend. Please feel free to reach out if there are more insights or concerns you’d like to discuss.
